Preparing room for the babe

Colors for baby's room

Making decorating decisions has to be one of the hardest things for me to do.  As many of you might already know, I am incredible indecisive.  I think I went through about 10 different color combos before settling on this one.  And, by the way, is anyone surprised to see yellow as the main color in the palette??

What I like about these colors together is they do not scream “baby”, and they do not scream “girl”.  They are cheery without being too pale or bold, and they are feminine without being too girly.  I am now in the process of altering my fabric to contain these colors so that I can still use it in the room.

I have made some other small decisions, like using this darling mobile for over the changing table.  I love that it is black and red, two colors that babies are highly responsive to.  I also love that it is not pastel colored, with stuffed, cartoon-like animals on it.

I have to mention how much I admire Meg of Sew Liberated, and this beautiful room she put together for her son.  She has some great ideas that I will be “borrowing”, like keeping a few toys and books out in rotation, instead of keeping them all out.  I also like the mirrors and pictures that she put at baby’s eye level where they can really be enjoyed.

I think part of the reason I have been so indecisive is I am not ready for my babe to be born yet.  I feel like there is so much I have to do before she gets here.  I want to be a good mother, and sometimes I think there are so many things I need to “fix” in my own life before I bring a new life into this world.  I am constantly trying to remind myself that no aspect of my life is ever going to be perfect for her.  I will always try to improve things that need improving, but I don’t have to be perfect to be a good mother.  I hope that I will be able to be humble enough to let my little girl teach me as I teach her.

If you have children, how did you prepare for the arrival of your little one?

With the holidays approaching I am feeling more and more pressure to finish up this little apartment of ours.  Family and friends will be coming to visit us over the next few weeks, and I would love to have a finished livingroom for all of us to sit in!  Mike promised to paint the place this past weekend (he’s so awesome!), if I could decide on a paint color by then.  After a near breakdown at the hardware store, we finally settled on three colors…Bright White (for the doors and trim), Profession (a light grey/tan color), and Chicken Wire (a greyish, greenish, blue).  There was much amusement had over the names of the colors.  The painting was all finished in one day, thanks to the help of some great friends.

And, you will never ever believe this, but I finally bought some fabric for curtains!  I’ll be making those this weekend, so look for pictures next monday!

When I think about the week to come, I can’t help but mentally back away in dread.  So much to do, so little time!!  Besides the usual (or not so usual, if you are me) laundry, groceries, dinners, and dusting, I want to make sure everything is organized and clean for when my family arrives next monday.  And yes, that means tackling the dreaded craft room, which I have not talked about here due to embarrassment.  I also want to hang some pictures around the house so that the newly painted walls have a chance to shine!  I am also hoping that over the next few days I can take some time to relax with Mike and enjoy the season before it passes us by.  It only comes around once a year, after all.

How are you preparing for the holidays?  Are you remembering to take some time to relax?

Bird Carving

The other night Mike had to stay out late to do some mass grading, so I thought I would spend a little time at the thrift store exploring.  I really love taking my time there because there are so many little treasures that could be missed if I am not looking carefully.  I go through each of the aisles looking and touching items until I find something perfect.

One of my favorite finds from that night was this little painted wood carving.  I am a huge fan of natural wood, as well as a huge fan of birds, and this piece combines them both.  There isn’t a hole or hanger in the back of the carving, so I am thinking about putting one on so that I can hang it up on the wall instead of propping it up.  I think that it would look great in a montage of little art pieces and display fabrics.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend…enjoy this last little bit of Autumn before it disappears into Winter!
