Mike is getting new glasses this week, so I decided to whip up an eyeglass holder to protect them. I used some old sweaters, one with a nice cabled design in army green, and another soft orange one for the lining. This is a great thing to make if you spent the whole winter avoiding one of your sweaters because you don’t like they way it looks. Put it to use and make one of these!
What you will need:
- two sweaters that you do not use (you can pick a couple up at the thrift store if you don’t have any that you want to cut up)
- matching or contrasting thread (I used bright green)
- sewing machine (can be hand sewn)
- needle
- Eyeglass Holder Pattern
Cut out a square of each sweater a bit bigger than the pattern, and set on the table to rest for an hour. This will help the stretchy material to settle into its original shape.
Cut out pattern and pin to the top of each piece of fabric. Cut out.
With right sides facing in, pin the two pieces of fabric together.
Using a sewing machine or a needle and thread, sew along the two sides and the bottom of the fabric. You may need to finish the edges using a zigzag stitch to prevent unraveling.
Turn the fabric right side out. Fold the top part of the lining over at 1/4″, and again at 1/4″, and pin to the outside of the outer fabric. Stitch along the edge of this piping (formed by the liner), fairly close to where the piping meets the outer fabric.
Place the fabric on a table with the liner facing up, the top further away from you and the bottom closer. Fold the finished fabric in thirds by folding in each side to make a tube (along fold lines). Hand stitch where the fabric meets. The fabric will overlap, so stitch both the edge of the inner side to the top, and the outer side to the inner (see picture).
Stitch along the bottom to close up the tube. You can do this either with a sewing machine or by hand.
