Hello everyone…a couple weeks back, Spoonflower had a free swatch day. Ever since I heard about the awesome site, I have been working on designing my own fabric. I was getting to the point where I was finished with the design, but I needed an excuse to order it. What better time than when you can get a sample of it for free? I ordered the fabric, and it came a few days ago. I am so pleased with how it turned out! I have another full yard of it on its way already. If you are thinking about ordering some of your fabric, I highly suggest the bamboo/cotton blend. It is so light and soft.
One of the things that I struggled with when designing this fabric was my personal style as a designer. Whenever I design something, I want it to be perfect. I think this is inherently a good thing, but I can get a little carried away when trying to get something just right. I guess one of my worries is that when I design something, I will somehow be defined by it, if that makes sense. Take this fabric, as an example. The design is cool, but not totally my “style”. The fabric does not fit into the category of fabrics I would choose for myself. However, I do like it still, and my hope is that even if it doesn’t totally fit me, it will fit other people to a tee.
Stay tuned for some projects with this fabric!

This is waaaaaaay cute, Kate! I understand what you mean about style though. I have some cute stuff from Heather Ross (and this reminds me of her style a bit), and I just don’t know what to do with it! It is *incredibly* adorable. And yet…
But I gotta say that I’m diggin’ hot air balloons these days. This is great, and I think you could totally sell it.
Your fabric is wonderful–so whimsical, also bright and clean looking. Funny coincidence that you designed this before “Up,” yet it captures some of the same spirit of fun, adventure, and hopefulness portrayed by the movie.
I can’t wait to see what you do with it! And congrats to the lucky person (or people) who end up with whatever you make with it! (I hope you sell what you create so more people can enjoy and be exposed to your beautiful work!)
I have had a look at Spponflower’s site many times but I first need to learn how to use design software before I can attempt this. Your fabric is really cool! It must have been so exciting to get the first lot in the post. Can’t wait to see what you make of it. I would not worry too much about your need for perfection. You are not alone. I have read designers such as AnnaMaria Horner and others’ sites whilst they are designing a new range of fabric and they all doubt themselves sometimes. When you look at the end result you go “What was the problem? This is so gorgeous!” If you did not worry, that would be a worry!
So pretty and whimsical, like Debonator said. I can’t wait to see what you’ll make of it.
How did you actually design it? With a computer program? Maybe this is a stupid question, but I love the idea of designing my own fabric, but wouldn’t even know where to start! Anyway, congrats!!
This fabric is really beautiful and I think its a wonderful attribute as a designer to be able design a composition for someone else even though it may not suit you. Clearly you have an eye for good taste even if it may not be your own! I could see this being an adorable theme for a girl’s room. Balloon adventures :)
[...] I was planning on using the fabric that I designed to make bedding for my little one, but I was really getting stuck on the color and trying to make [...]
ah gah that is so stinkin’ cute!!! I can’t believe you designed this yourself *jealous* I’ve done a little bit of Spoonflower stuff and it’s been pretty fun, although the color has hung me up as well. I ended up printing out a ginormous yard w/ the hexcodes of a bazillion colors on it so that I could use it as a color guide — have you done that yet? It’s very helpful, although as current orders are taking a month or so to fill, I am getting sick of waiting!!
Congrats too by the way!!!
