For some reason it is so hard to figure out what is an appropriate gift for a boss. You don’t want it to be too nice, but you don’t want it to be too cheap either. It is definitely a balance that is hard to achieve.
When I heard it was my boss’s birthday this week, I couldn’t really decide what to do. I thought about making some cookies, or some more of those delicious truffles, but there has been a plethora of sweets coming through work lately, and my waistline is definitely suffering (“but why would yours suffer if you are making it for someone else,” you might say…I would reply “I guess you have never seen me and chocolate in the same room together before”).
Anyways, food was definitely out of the question, so I though a bit about what she enjoys doing. There are books tucked into every corner of her office, and I know she does a lot of reading at home as well. I decided that a bookmark would be the perfect gift for her.
What you will need
- piece of felt 2″x6.5″
- two scraps of fabric 3″x7.5″ (one for each side)
- needle
- 2 colors of embroidery floss
Embroider one scrap of fabric with the design of your choice. I decided to do a flower, in red.
Place one piece of fabric right side down. Fold the seams over at the 1/4″ and press. Repeat with the embroidered fabric.
Layer fabrics by placing the embroidered fabric face down, then center the felt on top of that, then place the final fabric on top of that. Pin to hold in place.
Using a different color of embroidery floss, stitch around the edges of the bookmark, a little less than 1/4″ in from the edge.
Using a needle, String three pieces of floss through the center of the top of the bookmark. The pieces should measure about 8″ each. Twist each side of the floss, then bring together so that the twist together. Tie a knot at the top.

This is so sweet. I think I could make this!

What a lovely idea! Very personal, but not too personal for the boss.
CUTE! Do you happen to have step by step with photos? I know the directions were quite clear…but I’d be the one to mess up! :P
